I can confirm this bug in Hardy today. I thought it might be just that the tray icon had non-transparent backgrounds filled in, but I checked both the .png and .xpm files in Inkscape; they correctly have transparent pixels. Something deeper isn't right. Does the OP have any pointers to the patches that fixed this in other apps?
