I'm in a rather unusual situation here, not even having Ubuntu
installed, but I think I have some new information.

I'm a Gentoo user, and I have this problem too. The bug is strictly
depending on one of their packages, x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810. The
last version of the package that works is 2.3.2 and the first that I can
confirm as broken is 2.4.1. I have no idea about 2.4.0. I updated my
system today, and with 2.4.2 the problem persists. I'm still using
2.3.2.

Hope this helps. Not having Ubuntu there is nothing more I can do, but I
hope this narrows things down a bit.
