The crash only seems to happen if the bottom "details" part of the
update-manager window is visible while the details are being downloaded,
presumable when update-manager tries to replace the blank widget with
its text.
If you fire up update-manager with the "details" visible at the bottom,
but quickly click "hide details", then the busy icon remains but X does
not crash when the busy icon disappears. If you click "show details"
then, the changelog is displayed now problem. If you then highlight
another package with the bottom details visible again, X again crashes.
If I run "gksudo update-manager" on the command-line under screen so the
output is not lost, I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gksudo update-manager
/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/apt/__init__.py:17: FutureWarning: apt API not
stable yet
warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning)

The application 'gksudo' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.
