Hi, Same problem here. Im running Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 6 with updates installed and after booting gdm starts fine, but when i log in system freezes. I tried removing compiz-packages and after that hard locks does not happen but X is trying to restart itself again and again, after that screen is corrupted and fuzzy.
