Public bug reported:

64bits. nvidia driver (177.76-0ubuntu1) installed via synaptics. Tried
with and without xorg.conf

* Driver does not show up in Hardware drivers (jockey-gtk).
* I cannot activate compiz via Appearance > Visual Effects
* nvidia-settings gives me
  "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X
configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X
server."

Note that things worked until about 2.6.27-3 (or maybe parallel other
packages). Also note that I have an Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100 that _does_
work since the same kernel. Some other people seem to have similar issues:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=879134 (thats with 2.6.27-rc4, though)
