I also tried to reconf swap

swapoff /dev/sda6
mkswap /dev/sda6
update-intramfs -u

result, no joy, same situation.

also used xorf.conf.failsafe (vesa driver) as xorg.conf - result, no
joy, same situation.

there is something wrong during install - I'll see what the full release
brings about. just a note in closing - Hardy is fully functional without
any problems on same hardware; it detected the wired network at install
time right away.
