DItto this after update to Hardy Heron:
Audio broke with a kernel update. Using 2.6.24-19, I have had access to
volumes/mixer.

I got the following errors:

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control.
This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins
installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker
icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
This is what I use for audio:

Affected Devices:

00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce Audio Processing
Unit (rev a2)
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 AC97 Audio
Controler (MCP) (rev a1)

Reinstalled nvida driver including patch per these instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=253725

After installation set all system-preference-sound test tabs to OSS not
Auto! Now sound works for line out but not rear channel or bass/center.
Also, line out sound has continuous loud static. The line out static
was also present in Gutsy Gibbon. Although I had at some point during
Gutsy an ALSA configuration that allowed bass/center channel to work
without static. No idea what i did and i cant repeat it.

My motherboard is the Asus A7N8X Deluxe.
