Steve, this could not be normal - in /etc/security/limits.conf there is no limit configured, and I dont know, but could it be unlimited as default in Ubuntuty Hardy ?
Commenting out panic-action does not solve the problem, because it only prevents the mail and not the action. smbd still crashes and the users got the windows messages that their network drives are not available. Just a few minuts ago I had crashes after crashes and have to shut down samba and restart it, so I commented out the panic action but it smbs still crashes. Memtest shows now error with the memory and the rest of the system is running fine.
