Hi Jami, In fact, the device.map is unrelated here. The issue is that the 'groot' line in your menu.lst points to (hd0,0), and this is what update-grub uses to generate the boot stanzas.
But in hardy and above, there is conflict detection in place to notify users that the groot setting doesn't match the settings from your current boot stanzas. Did you receive a conflict dialog on upgrade (both when upgrading *to* Ubuntu 8.04, and when upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to Intrepid)? If you had a working menu.lst that pointed at your correct root partition, you should have.
