Sorry about calling you "Steve", Colin - I was in a hurry and must have been thinking of the person I was going to play at squash as soon as I finished the email!
The problem still exists with intrepid beta, but it looks as if the details might have changed. At this stage, I don't think the hardware is relevant, but I'm using an HP laptop with an intel P4 processor. I tried to replicate my previous installation process. 1. Boot the intrepid CD live system and pre-define a new 6.5GB partition with ext3. (tune2fs shows it has 256 byte inodes). 2. Start the installer from the object on the desktop. Choose manual partitioning. Use the existing swap partition. Use the existing boot partition (Hardy grub on ext3 with 128 byte inodes). The installation fails at the end. Unfortunately, I was running without a network connection and the crash report app failed. I didn't know how to collect all of the usual files, so I have attached those that seem to me to be most relevant. I can see from the syslog that the original alpha 4 kernel copy problem is not the direct cause of this current failure. Grub hasn't been wrecked and so I can still boot my Hardy system and work on the machine. I have the original (working) intrepid alpha 4 system and the new intrepid beta failed installation on two different partitions. What more can I do to help? If I've missed any important information held on the new system disk, I can send it easily. If you would like me to run the install again (with a network connection this time!), either from the live or the alternate CD's, just let me know.
