If by the ATI driver being "the one confirmed [to] cause of this problem" you mean the *only* one to be confirmed to cause this problem then please take a look at bug 229043. That bug deals with the same problem on an Intel G35-base mother board. Even though the title of the bug reads "freezing when shutting down" it is in fact about "freezing when logging out". It's not closed yet unfortunately.
The Intel driver has also been identified to have this problem (see comment 41) in the bug report.
