Same with 32-bin ubuntu 8.10 beta on Toshiba R500, except: 1. LiveCD works fine. 2. After the installation, I get the same message as described by the original poster, and X _is_ frozen, but the computer is not. I can switch to a different virtual terminal and use it in the command line mode.
