Martin, As a temporary solution, would it not be easier to use the infrastructure provided by update-notifier for notifying the user that they need to restart their session (as opposed to creating a whole new dialog). This is how the Firefox package currently notifies the user that they need to restart Firefox after an upgrade. Ok, it's not as good because the user isn't offered any buttons to restart their session (they only get a balloon in the notification area) - but it is quicker/easier and as Mark as pointed out, the solution is suboptimal (and temporary) anyway.
