I tried the updated radeonhd package - no luck. On the first go around, glxinfo reported no direct rendering.
I upgraded to the latest libdrm from xorg-edgers (libdrm_2.4.0~git20080926.2db8e0c8) and set Option DRI in my xorg.conf. Then direct rendering was reported as working by glxinfo.
