I got this error when attempting to change my 'Visual Effects' (in System > Preferences > Appearance) from "None" to "Normal".
It is possibly related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/145360 - I've just grabbed the latest version of compiz from the software update, and wondered if that had fixed the bug I was having.
