Okay, it's solved: adding "vga=normal" to the kernel parameters does the
trick.

Please apologize that I didn't find this solution (out of Ubuntu
documentation) earlier. Nevertheless, this could be a problem for other
persons. Perhaps this kernel parameter could be added automagically if a
ATI card is detected?
