The problem was fixed after reconfiguring the server with 'sudo dpkg- reconfigure xserver-xorg'. Looking at the diff between consecutive versions of my xorg.conf, it seems like the problem was on some or all of these issues:
- Using driver "nvidia" instead of "nv" - Enabling option "RenderAccel" - Enabling option "Triplebuffer" These changes were introduced manually to test compiz+beryl.
