I moved ~/.vlc. It now starts. No segfault. I reconfigured it so that it send the video to my TV. It works (dapper's vlc package crashed when I tried to send the video to tv-out). One thing I now notice is that edgy's vlc does not respond to lirc commands (I guess it is not compiled with lirc support), but I think I have to fill an other bug-report for this.
