I also have this same problem on an IBM Thinkpad X40. Installed fresh, first Kubuntu hardy, then upgraded to intrepid. Now KDE won't start unless I have the NoDRI option in my xorg.conf. The "failsafe" session option in kdm doesn't work either. No problems on hardy previously. I kinda need the DRI, so as a workaround I installed IceWM and that loads up just fine. I can even use KDE apps. Konsole, KNetworkManager and Konqueror all work just fine. Accelerated OpenGL also works fine. I'd be happy to provide any additional information you need.
