The first two cases have been fixed in GTK 2.14 recently, and I think they are 
in gtk-2-14-3.
I really do home that Ubuntu uses the fixed GTK+. I think there was a sponsor 
(Theppitak?)
that would make sure the patch, at least, makes it to 8.10.

Greek Polytonic should work. dead_psili is not a combining character;
it's a 'keysym' that when matched with a character (a greek vowel), it
produces a single, precompoesd, character from the Greek Extended
Unicode group.
