It has nothing to do with the Radeon cards because I am using a nVidia card and get a multi-coloured, illegible, screen with 6.10 Live. The card is a GeForce 6600 which is relevant because I don't have this problem with the other nVidia cards I have (5200 and 5500).
Furthermore, the same problem comes up with the 6600 card when I try and install OpenSUSE 10.1 and 10.2 so I suspect that the problem is really with the default basic driver(s) provided by xorg for use with xorg.conf..
