Seems I have pretty much the same problem as inflamestory. I don't have the computer in question near by, so I'll have to add information later. I had an intrepid RC installed earlier and also got the "Radio disabled by hw kill switch". All the modules are loaded and all seems fine though. Then I lost patience and installed Mandriva 2009 B2 and there the WLAN worked great without having to do anything.
Now to the weird part; I downloaded Kubuntu 8.10 Beta and booted it in Live mode, and found out the WLAN worked great. I then installed Kubuntu on harddrive, and found that the problem came back. Seems weird it works in Live mode, but not when it's installed.
