I am also having this same problem on my Kubuntu 8.10 installed from alpha but dist-upgraded to the latest available packages on the 18th of October. When I attempt to mount the drive by using the New Device Notifier it says that the superblock is invalid. After some further inspection I found the following messages in dmesg
[ 1675.947263] UDF-fs: No partition found (1) [ 1676.094001] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format. [ 1684.391442] UDF-fs: No partition found (1) [ 1684.425319] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format. It seems as though it is looking for a) the wrong filesystem type and b) the wrong type of device. In my case I have tried with ext3, vfat and ntfs external drives. In each case it always fails with the same symptoms/error messages.
