I just tried it again today: -joystick is not installed, only -evdev.
After plugging in the pad, the cursor moves when I move the analog
stick. When I press a button, Xorg crashes and I bump back to the
console.

Actually, I consider it a bug that the X server uses the joystick at
all; most if not all joystick-aware applications access it directly. Is
there a way to revert to the old behaviour (Xorg not using the joystick
at all)?
