I can confirm that after an upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid just a few days ago the battery behaviour got worse. I am now on 2.6.27-7-generic SMP x86_64.
The battery and AC status seem to be detected correctly during boot, but after that the charge applet displays: "Battery state could not be read at this time", and also detects the AC state wrong. This is on an MSI S271 (1058) with BIOS version 1.21.
