I agree, I think the user should have a choice of naming all the partition in media "disk-#" or by label, but this would give too many options to the user and gnome is mainly trying to have more simplicity. I think the reason it displays the size is due to a limitation, not being able to read the label until the partition is mounted. I may be wrong.
