I'm reopening this bug as I have more info on it.

I discovered that the error occurs when my tv-set is connected on
startup. The external screen has an odd resolution of 1280x768 which is
not supported by the internal display. The graphics card does not allow
a virtal size enough for the two screens and ubuntu sets the screen mode
to mirror and picks the resolution 1024x768, probably the largest common
resolution. When mirroring, this cannot be changed, which is a greater
issue. It however works perfectly on hardy, where the external screen
just "looses" a few pixel on the top and bottom of the image.

The next error occurs when I disconnect the external screen and change
the resolution to normal. The screen gets a black area to the right
where the mouse pointer can go, but not the gnome-panel. Maximizing
windows aligns them with the edge of the to the black area.
