Yep,I've just retested.I am using Kubuntu 8.04, packages updated.The issue seems to come from the kio_xxx suite of software.The speed reported by them for the copy is high(20 MB/sec) followed by some "stalled" periods.I can only assume that some sort of buffer is built for the copy operation and it's the buffer(or the method for it ) that messed up the speed of my hdd( so that even the lightest operation gets the load over 2.5 (0.5 usually)).Please let me know if I can provide additional info.All the best.
