Also, why wasn't this a problem in gutsy? My brightness shortcut keys worked just fine then. It wasn't until 8.04 that it was broken (and lingers in 8.10, so far). Was there something that specifically prevented this behavior in gutsy, or was there something introduced in hardy that caused it?
