Yeah, kang's patch works fine on *buntu 8.10 using the 2.6.27-7-generic kernel and vmware server 1.0.7.
Basically, download the vmware server, install it, but don't configure it yet. Then download the patch by kang, extract it and run the runme.pl as sudo.
