This seems to be still happening with the latest Intrepid beta. I believe that a program that starts during login crashes. I have yet to determine which program and why it is crashing. This happens when logging in through gdm as well as when starting X manually (startx). Nothing helpful is inserted into the .xsession_errors file. In fact, only about half of a normal startup is written to the file.
