For others with the same problem, I found out what the problem was, at
least in my case.

I had the very same issue as reported here for a good while, an obsolete
tzdata-java was dependent on tzdata=2008b-1ubuntu1, preventing
installation of both openjdk-6 and an up to date tzdata. Apparently the
two binary packages even originate from a single source package, making
the situation rather strange.

Turned out my /etc/apt/sources.list was inconsistent. tzdata is part of
main, but tzdata-java is part of universe. Somehow my
/etc/apt/sources.list was missing updates for universe (and multiverse).
While I was at it, I also added hardy-security for universe and
multiverse as well. I must have forgotten those entries while editing
sources.list.

After fixing my sources.list, it now works again. Besides tzdata-java
there was about a dozen updates to apply, including a few security-
related ones.
