It seems to be a bad interraction with gnome-keyring-daemon somehow...
I found the following workaround :

1) stop NetworkManager and kill nm-applet
2) Launch seahorse. In the tab "Passwords" there should be an entry of the form:
VPN password secret for CONNECTIONNAME/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp/vpn

where CONNECTIONNAME is the VPN connection which is failing. Delete this
entry.

restart networkmanager and nm-applet.
3) Edit the parameters of VPN CONNECTIONNAME but leave the password field blank.

4) Connect to VPN. A dialog box pops up and ask for the VPN password. Put it.
The connection should work again
(at least it works for me).
