Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is an actual bug with Ubuntu, or a separate graphics
driver issue but I witnessed some very strange artifacts after
installing the NVidia Display Drivers (v177) and running the partial
system update for Ubuntu 8.10 Beta.

I ran the partial system update Ubuntu kept bugging me about and
everything seemed to go fine. Ubuntu prompted me to restart my laptop
which went on to do. The usual "Ubuntu shutdown" screen appeared with
the orange progress bar and things hung here for a quite a bit longer
than normal.

Suddenly, my screen went completely black, and a few seconds, later
white vertical lines started emerging from the left of the display.
These lines continued to move left and fill across the screen while
changing colours. At first I thought this was some weird screen saver or
display test but it never seemed to end and nothing I tried would stop
i. Eventually I forced the laptop to shutdown by holding the power
button.
