I do know the fact that Ubuntu deactivated the root-account.
However, your argument with the live-cd is slightly wrong. I tried editing the 
required files in a livecd first, and even there, you are not able to acces 
important files ( e.g. the /etc/sudoers file ), as every text-editor tells you 
"permission denied" . But maybe its just me or I missed to notice something.
