I have HP Compaq nx8220 as well. Sleep mode was not working since ages (~2.5 years) for me. However when I switched to 8.10 beta (I think mid september) it started to work!
Now it stopped to work again, I think from last Thursday or Friday (2008-10-16/17). Even more, sound buttons stopped to work too.
