The following solution worked great for me

I was using gutsy 7.10.
After a python update, the gdm didnt go past login screen.
gdm kept restarting denying me access to Ctrl+Alt+F2 screens

I was on the issue for whole day, when atlast i found that
python is giving errors when importing gtk
with undefined symbol FT_Library_SetLcdFilter
