I didn't follow the directions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Joystick_lshal exactly: I ran the
lshal command first when the steering wheel was attached to the computer
and then ran it without it (missed that part in the instructions). It
seemed to work okay, but if it's a problem I can do the procedure again.
I just have to go to sleep now :)
