I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc

I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works

This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.

It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between
versions of alsa.

So I think what happened is what alsa put in my .asoundrc in dapper is
different to what alsa wanted to put into my .asoundrc in edgy.

So it is still kind of a edgy and/or alsa bug. It has an easy fix so you
can probably close this bug report.

I did do a fresh install of edgy, but I kept my /home partition so lots
of dot files remained from dapper. I guess this is a kind of ongoing
problem in upgrades/fresh installs.
