Ok, seems the backports package works on a eeePC 900, no performance loss as far as I can tell.
But it kind of sucked loosing network connectivity after a simple update without any warning. Bit difficult to search for this solution when you are offline... I would have expected these kind of things to be documented more clearly with 8.10 now being a release candidate and all.
