This seems to be a timing thing. I'm having the same problem and my log lists

NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): device state change: 5 -> 6 NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0/wireless): asking for new secrets Sometime, very occasionally, it will authenticate and then it seems to stay authenticated. I'm sat about 6 feet from the AP aerial so I get something like 97% signal strength according to nm-tool.
