This seems to be a timing thing.

I'm having the same problem and my log lists

Sometime, very occasionally, it will authenticate and then it seems to
stay authenticated. I'm sat about 6 feet from the AP aerial so I get
something like 97% signal strength according to nm-tool. But, this looks
a little strange as they seem to be the same MAC (unless I'm
misunderstanding what the output of nm-tool gives)

I sometimes had this issue with 8.04 as well but the 8.10 RC seems to be
worse.
