Leann, It turns out that my problem was related to one particular SD card of mine; others were fine.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu was the only place this card did not work properly; I could use it in my phone and under Windows (using my laptop's card reader, where it didn't work in Ubuntu) without difficulty. After freshly formatting the card, it now works everywhere, including Ubuntu. Unfortunately, this means I can no longer reproduce the issue.
