One more update :-) This time with good news. I removed all post-install customizations from Intrepid, and setting <I120> does in fact work correctly wrt the T60p Mute button. Naked config defaults to ACPI keyboard mappings, and those work correctly on my T60p with the single modification to /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev.
