repositories now, so you can't get it with apt-get? That would be really
bad for us users, as we would have to download it manually from console
(?)

One other option is to install fglrx (I did), but for that I think you
would have to manually edit sources.lst from console, so again not user
friendly.

I think this is a big issue, and it obviously affects quite a few
people. Many more might just get a blank screen from that LiveCD that
was supposed to "just work", so they conclude that Ubuntu s#$%^ and go
on with their Windows lives ;)
