Ok, the problem does go away when I disable the NVIDIA driver through the System->Administration->Hardware Drivers panel.
I think a priority needs to be settled upon, especially since new users first experiences with linux are usually something like this: 1. Install 2. Surfing the web. 3. Writing email. 4. ??? Wish I new how to help ...
