I too have this problem, the system will hang indefinitely (I let my computer sit at the blank screen for about 7 hours. However if i do not log in to ubuntu and merely shutdown from the login screen it will shutdown correctly. my log file shows an error saying the usplash is tainted ? i have attached the portion.
