I have the same issue here after upgrade to Intrepid (8.10) using German and Japanese keyboard layout (Thinkpad T61). After X restart I suddenly have extra layout showing by keyboard indicator with text "??". I can open the keyboard indicator applet doing some dummy changes and the additional layout disappears (until next x-start etc.)
