I have the same problem. I have reinstalled 8.10 i386 alternate twice now and metacity crashes on startup. I've noticed different reports of this same problem, and this might be a duplicate of another but I'm not sure. This bug breaks functionality because I have no window borders on boot, and the gnome panels do not recognize windows. I would suggest re-opening of this bug.
