Did not try linux-backports-modules. I don't know if Intrepid / kernel 2.6.27 was supposed to correct this bug, but it didn't work for me.
However I did follow the steps on https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LaptopTestingTeam/SonyVGN-SR19VN , which worked for me. Wireless is up and running now.
