Banshee is using taglib-sharp to read the tags and may be that is why it can read the incorrectly encoded metadata. Apparently this is a known issue with gst0.10 as mentioned on Aaron Bockover's blog http://abock.org/2006/10/30/cracking-down-on-heap-abuse-part-2/
